Ayurvedic Massage

Ayurvedic Massage is an ancient Indian form of healing treatment that has been refined into what it is today over the course of thousands of years. Ayrurvedic Massage is a technique unheard of by many--- a long-kept secret of India, but is now available at Healing Haven Massage and Wellness. This treatment uses the knowledge of the body, knowledge of scents and specialty oils, knowledge of music and sound, and knowledge of bodywork-techniques combining them into one specialty massage treatment that embraces all of the senses. Ideally this experience is best taken daily to soothe/relieve the body, mind, and soul from everyday stresses of the world. You will feel joyful, healed, refreshed and renewed.

Before the massage begins the therapist will concentrate his or her energy in a focuses state and possibly recite a prayer, either silently or aloud. The main forms of movement in the massage treatment are: “active” which is strong pressure, “persuasive” which is the kneading or pinching of small muscles with the forefinger and thumb, and also “passive” which is a more delicate stroke. During an Ayurvedic Massage it is believed that a subtle transfer of electromagnetic energy occurs between the massage therapist and client, that is, if the client feels safe and is open and receptive to this massage treatment. It is important to allow it to happen and receive the healing effects. The therapist will sync his or her breathing with the clients to form a stronger bond of connection for the session focusing on the technique and energy. This massage is a form of full-body massage, but specifications can be made to fit your individual therapeutic needs and be catered to you.

Contact Healing Haven by Phone (832-577-3998) or email (healinghavenmassagetx@gmail.com) to book or if you have any questions, and please let them know that Ray referred you.  Thank you.

The Mozart Effect

The basic idea of the theory of the "Mozart Effect" is that listening to classical Mozart symphonies/music can make a person smarter and increases IQ.

This theory has been tested and the findings, although they do not entirely match the hypothesis, do yield some interesting results.  A set of research-done suggests that listening to certain specific music from Mozart may induce a short-term improvement on the performance of certain kinds of mental tasks known as "spatial-temporal reasoning," and it is suggested that early childhood exposure to classical music has beneficial effects on mental development.

Don Campbell, Inc., claims benefits far beyond improving "spatio-temporal reasoning" or "raising intelligence," defining it as "an inclusive term signifying the transformational powers of music in health, education, and well-being." Don Campbell wrote a book on the subject called "The Mozart Effect."

A 1997 book by Don Campbell, "The Mozart Effect: Tapping the Power of Music to Heal the Body, Strengthen the Mind, and Unlock the Creative Spirit," discusses the theory that listening to Mozart (especially the piano concertos) may temporarily increase a person's IQ and produce many other beneficial effects on mental function. Campbell recommends playing specifically selected classical music to infants, in the expectation that it will benefit their mental development.

After The Mozart Effect, Campbell wrote a follow-up book, "The Mozart Effect For Children," and created related products. Among these are collections of music that he states harness the Mozart effect to enhance "deep rest and rejuvenation," "intelligence and learning," and "creativity and imagination." Campbell defines the term as "an inclusive term signifying the transformational powers of music in health, education, and well-being. It represents the general use of music to reduce stress, depression, or anxiety; induce relaxation or sleep; activate the body; and improve memory or awareness. Innovative and experimental uses of music and sound can improve listening disorders, dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, autism, and other mental and physical disorders and diseases." These theories are controversial and there are a mix of results from various studies, and while some supportive reports have been published, studies with positive results have tended to be associated with any form of music that has energetic and positive emotional qualities. Moreover, the intellectual benefits of enhanced mood and arousal are not restricted to "spatial-temporal reasoning," but extend to speed of processing and creative problem solving.

French researcher Dr. Alfred A. Tomatis in his book "Why Mozart?" speaks about the Mozart Effect. He used Mozart's music in efforts to "retrain" the ear, and believed that listening to the music presented at differing frequencies benefitted the ear--- promoting healing and the development of the brain.

Rauscher, Shaw, and Ky in 1993 investigated the "Mozart Effect" on spatial reasoning, and the results were published in "Nature." They gave research participants one of three standard tests of abstract spatial reasoning after they had experienced each of three different listening conditions: the "Sonata for Two Pianos in D major, K. 448" by Mozart, verbal relaxation instructions, and silence. They found a temporary enhancement of spatial-reasoning listening to Mozart. The study gives no statement of an increase in IQ in general because IQ was never measured although the results were popularly interpreted as an increase in general IQ.

In 1994, "New York Times" music columnist Alex Ross wrote in an article, "researchers [Rauscher and Shaw] have determined that listening to Mozart actually makes you smarter." It described one study in which three and four-year-olds who were given eight months of private piano lessons scored 30% higher on tests of spatio-temporal reasoning than control groups given computer lessons, singing lessons, and no training.

On January 13, 1998, when Zell Miller, governor of Georgia, announced that his proposed state budget would include $105,000 a year to provide every child born in Georgia with a tape or CD of classical music he stated, "No one questions that listening to music at a very early age affects the spatial-temporal reasoning that underlies math and engineering and even chess." Miller played legislators some of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" on a tape recorder and asked "Now, don't you feel smarter already?" Miller asked Yoel Levi, music director of the Atlanta Symphony, to compile a collection of classical pieces that should be included. State representative Homer DeLoach said "I asked about the possibility of including some Charlie Daniels or something like that, but they said they thought the classical music has a greater positive impact."  On efforts like Miller's budget proposal, and the press attention surrounding the effect, Rauscher has said, "I don't think it can hurt. I'm all for exposing children to wonderful cultural experiences. But I do think the money could be better spent on music education programs."

John Jenkins played Sonata K.448 to patients with epilepsy and found a decrease in epileptiform activity. According to the British Epilepsy Organization, research has suggested that apart from Mozart's "K.448" and "Piano Concerto No. 23 (K. 488)," only one other piece of music has been found to have a similar effect; a song by the Greek composer Yanni, entitled "Acroyali/Standing in Motion" (version from Yanni Live at the Acropolis performed at the Acropolis). It was determined to have the "Mozart effect", by the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine because it was similar to Mozart's K.448 in tempo, structure, melodic and harmonic consonance and predictability.

In 1999 a major challenge was raised to the existence of the Mozart Effect by two teams of researchers. In a pair of papers published together under the title "Prelude or Requiem for the Mozart Effect" Chabris reported a meta-analysis suggesting that "any cognitive enhancement is SMALL and does not reflect any change in IQ or reasoning ability 'in general,' but instead derives entirely from performance on one specific type of cognitive task and has a simple neuropsychological explanation" called "enjoyment arousal." He cites a study that found that "listening either to Mozart or to a passage from a Stephen King story enhanced subjects' performance in paper folding and cutting (one of the tests frequently employed by Rauscher and Shaw) but only for those who enjoyed what they heard." Steele et. al. found that "listening to Mozart produced a 3-point increase relative(compared) to silence in one experiment." In another study, the effect was replicated with the original Mozart music, but the effect was eliminated when the tempo was slowed down and major chords were replaced by minor chords. The "neural resonance" theory of Rauscher and colleagues contends that Mozart's music primes the neural pathways of spatial reasoning. Popular presentations of the "Mozart effect", including Alex Ross's comment that "listening to Mozart actually makes you smarter" and Zell Miller's "don't you feel smarter" query to the Georgia legislature, almost always tie it to "intelligence."

Another meta-analysis by Pietschnig, Voracek, and Formann in 2010 combined results of 39 studies to answer the question as to whether or not the Mozart Effect exists. They concluded that there isn't a lot of evidence to support the Mozart Effect, as shown by the small effect sizes, however, the most striking finding in this analysis is the significantly larger effects published in studies affiliated with Rauscher or Rideout--- with effect sizes more than three times higher.

Research on animals suggests that exposure to even rats improves their maze learning abilities. A German sewage treatment plant plays Mozart music to break down the waste faster, reports the UK Guardian. Anton Stucki, chief operator of the Treuenbrietzen plant was quoted as saying, "We think the secret is in the vibrations of the music, which penetrate everything—including the water, the sewage and the cells."

There are a variety of ideas on this topic, and the results are controversial.  We can see a list of potential positive results, and not a list of negatives, so overall, it wouldn't hurt to give it a try and expose small children to such forms of classical music just-in-case there could be some benefit to it.

8 Ways Children can Safely Gently Detox from Vaccinations

Some children and babies have bad reactions to vaccinations, some even die from vaccinations. There are cases that a vaccination becomes mandatory, or a parent chooses to give a child a vaccination and the child has a bad reaction. If a child is either required to get a vaccination, or a parent regrets giving a vaccination, there are certain ways to gently detox the body from the dangerous heavy metals and toxins in the vaccinations. Below I have listed 8 things to incorporate for detoxification for children, not all is recommended for small babies. It is best to talk to a holistic doctor before attempting to detox a small child or baby, occasionally there are minor side-effects to the detox.

1) Silica

Silica is used for heavy metal detoxification and naturally occurs in a variety of foods and plants such as: Rye, Barley, Oats, Wheat, Nuts, Horsetail Herb, and Alfalfa Sprouts. When attempting to detox of metals include eating plenty of age-appropriate silica-rich foods.

The "Natural News" website states that “Aluminum is passed out through the urine when one supplements silica. It seems there’s little danger of taking too much, as long as adequate water is consumed and vitamin B1 and potassium levels are maintained.”

2) Garlic

Through scientific study, garlic has been proven to treat heavy-metal poisoning and other conditions. The "Organic Lifestyle Magazine" suggests for a person to consume three cloves of garlic a day to help remove toxins from the body.

3) Detoxification Bath & Cilantro

A detoxification bath is one of the most effective ways to detox the body and is effective even for young children. "Living Traditionally" suggests a detoxification bath using both Zendocrine and Epsom Salt. Zendocrine is an essential oil mixture from "Doterra" made up of tangerine, rosemary, geranium, juniper berry, and cilantro. If using Essential oils with small children first test with a small amount to make sure there is no reaction to the Essential Oil before trying a bigger amount. Some children have sensitivities to the high concentration of pure Essential Oils.

In addition to that: rosemary, juniper berry, and cilantro are good choices for detoxification.  According to "Natural Society," cilantro is a "very gentle detoxification tool" and is even effective for removing heavy-metals from the brain. For 2-3 weeks, add a teaspoon of cilantro to your food, smoothie, or just eat it. You can also substitute with 6-7 drops of Cilantro Essential Oil by adding it to your bath.  Tangerine and geranium are also natural purifiers.

4) Probiotics

Probiotics help to place good bacteria back where needed to keep the body in proper function when the body has been thrown off by toxins. There are children pro-biotic formulas available for young children, alternatively there are probiotic-rich foods.

Some good probiotic foods include: Kefir, Organic Greek Yogurt, Sauerkraut, Kombucha, and Fermented Vegetables.

5) Vitamin C

Vitamin C also helps boost the immune system, chewable Vitamin C tablets, or plenty of oranges, are good options for small children.

6) Omega 3 Oils

Omega 3 Oils are good for cell-repair and of course keeping your brain healthy. This is because of their high fat content--- similar to the fats that are naturally part of cell and brain-systems. One of the best sources of Omega 3 oils for detoxification is "Cod Liver Oil." One teaspoon per day should be enough, or the use of a supplement.  Alternatively Flax Seeds can be grinded up and included in food.  My youngest nephew loves peanut-butter, Jelly, and Flax-Seed sandwiches--- a good source of Omega-Fatty Acids.

7) Chlorella

Chlorella is one of the best detoxifying substances available. According to Dr. Mercola, “Chlorella is uniquely designed to not bind to the minerals your body naturally needs to function optimally. It does not bind to beneficial minerals like calcium, magnesium, or zinc. It’s almost as if chlorella knows which metals belong in your body and which chemicals need to be removed. Supplementing with chlorella is like unleashing a tiny army inside your body to fight the battle of removing toxins from your tissues and ushering them back outside your body where they belong.”
You can add a powered form of Chlorella to a smoothie, or take it in supplement form.

8) Drink Plenty of Water

Make sure in addition to this, to drink plenty of water.

Berry Antioxidant! Top 10 Berries for Antioxidants

High antioxidant foods are important to oxidize the body, maintain skin-related health, and fight free-radicals.  This is a short list of a top 10 rating of common berries loaded with antioxidants.  We will update the list in the future to also include less-common high-antioxidant berries that didn't make the list.

1) Black Raspberries: 19220 ORAC score
2) Elderberries: 14,697 ORAC score
3) Wild blueberries: 9,621 ORAC score
4) Cranberries: 9,090 ORAC score
5) Bilberries: 7570 ORAC score
6) Mulberries: 6130 ORAC score
7) Blackberries: 5,905 ORAC score8) Raspberries: 5065 ORAC score
9) Goji berries: 4,310 ORAC score
10) Strawberries: 4302 ORAC score

Non-berry honorable mention: Pomegranate 4479

What are ORAC Units?

The ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) unit... or “ORAC score” is a method of measuring the in vitro antioxidant capacity of different foods and supplements. More than two decades in the making, it was originally developed by scientists working at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and USDA... many scientists theorize that foods higher on the ORAC scale may be more effective at neutralizing free radicals. Although unproven, according to the free-radical theory of aging, this may slow the oxidative processes and free radical damage that can contribute to age-related degeneration and disease. Financial Wellness

It is important to maintain wellness all around: Mind, Body and Soul, but another factor to wellness is your Financial health which affects all three of the others.  If you are constantly stressing about money it obviously puts a toll on your mind and physical health.  If you, however, are organized with your money and living within your means then you are able to take care of your family without giving up every hour of your day to the office.  With right finances you will even have excess money to donate to charities, your congregation, struggling loved ones, and fund mission trips.
In the next edit of this document I will be typing out a Game Plan that has worked great for myself.

Poorly Dressed Children Playing in Snow and Taking Ice Showers

In some regions of the world, Russia/Siberia being some of the main areas, young children are encouraged to run around in the snow either completely naked or in just their underwear.  Some schools have the children strip down into their underwear and play in the snow, in some cases even poor cold buckets of water on themselves in freezing temperatures.  This is part might explain why Russians generally have a reputation for being very strong, touch and durable.  On the surface this sounds cruel to do for children, or even like abuse, but various tests, studies, and words from parents, doctors, and pediatricians, in these places show that these children not only generally get sick less, but have higher immune systems and more energy.  Many of them actually enjoy these activities.  If it works for them, then why not?

How does it work though?
1) There are many ways to build immunity to different things.  Before the children go out to play in the snow they warm up inside a sauna.
2) Then they go out and run around, some places incorporate buckets of ice-cold water for the children to pour upon themselves, while other locations do not go to that extent.
3) After playing a while they go back inside and drink warm herbal teas (preferably organic to avoid pesticides).

A mix of the sauna, the playing in the cold with minimal clothing, and drinking herbal tea as they warm back up builds up their immune system to the cold, preventing them from getting sick.

Who should do this?
This system of immune system building is not for everyone!  If you live in a region that has high snow seasons and offers this kind of activity then it is something to consider as a POSSIBILITY after looking at other options.  If this is the case and you still want to do it, I recommend using the privacy of your own backyard rather than a public location so your children don't get glared at for running around in their underwear in the snow.

Another video: https://www.facebook.com/inthenow/videos/730515220432183/

Are there other ways to prevent our children from getting sick in the snow?
Absolutely, but there are no full-proof options.  There is always the possibility of getting sick.  Instead of building their immune system to the snow, you can be old-skool and protect them from the shivering temperatures by keeping them warm indoors and well-warm dressed when going outside.  If you want to boost their immunity to the temperature you can also do a similar method to the one in this blog: 1) using a sauna first, 2) letting them play in the snow modestly dressed (they don't have to be in their underwear) for just a short time, 3) then warming them up inside with blankets and a cup of organic herbal tea.  There are plenty of risks to letting your child play out in the cold snow.  Do your research before deciding to do something as unusual as this method mentioned in this blog.
